Alternative Wildlife Solutions (AWS) was created in 2004 after we realized there were no humane wildlife services available in Victoria for pest removal and pest control problems.
AWS has provided services to many local home owners and business clients in the Victoria and Southern Vancouver Island, BC, area.
Services include the humane removal, rescue, and management of wildlife including adult animals and their young.
Full home inspection, including attic, crawlspace, and surrounding property
Humanely remove adults and reunite offspring with adults
Wildlife proof the home which involves identifying and blocking all entry points and potential entry points
Services include removal and prevention of reoccurrence. Humane trapping is used for removal. Once the animal is removed we investigate how to prevent it from happening again. Various methods are used to control and prevent reoccurrence (exclusion, meaning to block entrances, proofing, as in squirrel-proofing, or repellents), or to reduce occurrence (abatement, spike stripping to gull-proof a roof, or use of a trained animal to haze and chase away wildlife).
Geese, Gulls, Pigeons and other bird species
Any other problematic wildlife species – for example, we have rescued eagles, owls, and other animals (see our News for examples!!)
AWS will mouse and rat proof a house, but it is not responsible for the trapping or removal of mice/rats. However we have often used our dog Pixie, a beautiful Jack Russel, to search a building to find hidden animals and pathways that rats may use, and in one example, Pixie successfully found a lost pet hamster in a home!!
All repairs come with a 5 year guarantee
AWS employs two Harris Hawks (Easy and Taruk) and a Jack Russell (Pixie). Their jobs include domestic/cottontail rabbit control and the hazing of geese and ducks from local school yards and farm fields. We have recently used a small radio-controlled watercraft to haze geese from large lakes and ponds.
Consultations and education services are also available
AWS volunteers with various wildlife groups such as: Wild ARC, BC SPCA, Hancock Wildlife Foundation, and Oases.
See AWS in action!!In this video done by Shaw TV, Jeff explains his methods and shows how raccoon pups are humanely removed from beneath a house.
